The arms are protected by traditional kote constructed from chain mail and iron plates, finished with attractive fur cuffs. Natural fur trimming also decorates the lower edges of the armour, lending the ensemble the desirable appearance of campaign equipment while enhancing its overall presence.

Colour and Aesthetic Character

This armour is accompanied by a Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō certificate issued by the Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai, certificate number 223, signed in June 2024 by Chairman Nagata Hitoshi.

The certificate confirms that the cuirass dates to the middle Edo period. It further notes that the helmet is associated with the armour, while the buffalo-horn side crests (wakidate) and shoulder guards (sode) are later additions, a perfectly acceptable and historically common configuration for preserved Japanese armour.
