Geishas and samurais exhibition: Memories of Japan

A celebration of japanese art, samurai culture and traditional heritage

At Supein Nihonto, we are committed not only to preserving authentic Japanese swords and samurai armour, but also to sharing the rich cultural heritage that surrounds them. For this reason, it was a great honour to participate in the exhibition “Geishas and Samurais: Memories of Japan”, one of the most important Japanese art exhibitions held in Spain in recent years.
Thanks to the collaboration between the Barcelona City Council, cultural associations dedicated to strengthening relations between Spain and Japan, and the Spanish Guild of Antique Dealers, this remarkable exhibition brought together an exceptional collection of Japanese artworks spanning several centuries of history.
The exhibition was held at the prestigious Palau Martorell in Barcelona, an elegant nineteenth-century neoclassical building located in the historic heart of the city, just a short distance from the Mediterranean Sea.

Exploring the world of the samurai and the geisha

The exhibition offered visitors a unique opportunity to discover two of the most iconic figures of Japanese culture: the samurai and the geisha.
Through an extraordinary selection of original works, visitors were able to explore the traditions, aesthetics and history of Japan from the Edo Period (1603–1868) through the Meiji Era (1868–1912).
Among the exhibited pieces were:
  • Authentic samurai swords (nihonto)
  • Traditional Japanese armour (yoroi and gusoku)
  • Samurai helmets (kabuto)
  • Noh theatre masks
  • Inrō and netsuke
  • Ukiyo-e woodblock prints
  • Japanese decorative arts and antiques
  • Historical weapons and martial artefacts
Each object offered insight into the craftsmanship, symbolism and cultural values that shaped Japanese society for centuries.

Supein Nihonto's Contribution to the Exhibition

As representatives of Supein Nihonto, we were honoured to contribute a significant number of pieces dedicated to samurai culture.
Among the items provided for display were several complete samurai armours, kabuto helmets, authentic Japanese swords, and a selection of fine Japanese antiques including inrō and netsuke.
Many of the pieces exhibited have previously appeared on our website and form part of the collection that we continue to offer to collectors and museums worldwide. Their participation in an exhibition of this importance further strengthens their historical provenance and collector appeal.
Being entrusted with such a substantial contribution to the samurai section of the exhibition was both a privilege and a responsibility that we accepted with great pride.

Palau Martorell: An exceptional venue

The exhibition took place at the renowned Palau Martorell, one of Barcelona’s most distinguished cultural venues.
Its elegant neoclassical architecture provided the perfect setting for the display of Japanese artworks, creating a dialogue between European architectural heritage and centuries of Japanese artistic tradition.
The exhibition remained open from March 10th to September 8th, 2024, welcoming thousands of visitors from Spain and abroad.

The opening ceremony

We had the pleasure of attending the official inauguration alongside representatives from the worlds of art, culture, politics, and diplomacy.
Among the attendees were members of Japanese cultural associations, ambassadors, collectors, historians, and specialists dedicated to the preservation of Japanese heritage.
The overwhelmingly positive response from both visitors and experts confirmed the importance of initiatives that promote greater understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture outside Japan.

Preserving japanese heritage through public exhibitions

Exhibitions such as Geishas and Samurais: Memories of Japan play a vital role in preserving and promoting Japanese cultural heritage.
For many visitors, this exhibition represented a rare opportunity to see authentic samurai armour, Japanese swords, and historical artefacts outside Japan. These objects are not only works of art but also historical documents that help us understand the values, beliefs, and craftsmanship of past generations.
At Supein Nihonto, we strongly believe that sharing these treasures with the public contributes to a deeper appreciation of Japanese history and encourages future generations to preserve this extraordinary legacy.

I received a beautiful tokubetsu hozon nihonto for Christmas from Supein. Actually my wife purchased the sword after receiving some helpful hints and recommendations lol. She knows absolutely nothing about nihonto but Supein walked her through everything honestly and I ended up with something beyond my dreams and expectations, honestly. The packing was exceptional, shipping fast and the sword itself a literal work of art. Supein has a lifetime customer now as my collection grows. Thank you!

I had been looking for a tachi with a lot of curvature for a long time and I called Supein Nihonto. They didn't have any tachi with the sori I was looking for, but I was treated with a lot of love and professionalism and we were talking for a long time. The next day I received a call from the shop, telling me that they had received new swords and that there was a tachi with a lot of sori. That same afternoon he already had a lot of photos of the sword and its measurements. I found the price good, especially if I compared it to other Spanish sellers of Nihonto. The shipment took a day and the package arrived in perfect condition, as the person in charge of the packaging puts a lot of effort into the work and the result is a strong packaging. Without a doubt, Supein Nihonto is my 100% recommendation!
