An exceptional wakizashi signed Heian-jō Jūnin Tadakuni 平安城住人忠国, attributed by the NBTHK to Shodai Shinano Daijō Tadakuni 初代信濃大掾忠国, founder of the Kyoto branch of the celebrated Hizen Tadayoshi school.
Preserved in healthy polish and accompanied by its NBTHK Hozon Tōken certificate issued in Reiwa 7 (2025), together with a Hiroshima Prefecture registration from Shōwa 39 (1964), this refined blade is mounted in a complete Edo-period koshirae of excellent quality.
Shodai Tadakuni belonged to the prestigious Hizen Tadayoshi tradition, one of the most important swordsmithing lineages of the Edo period. After training within this celebrated school, he relocated to Kyōto, the ancient Heian-jō, where he established his own distinguished forge.
His early works are signed Heian-jō jū or Heian-jō jūnin Tadakuni, referring to his residence in the “Capital of Peace”. He was later granted the honorary title Shinano Daijō, after which he signed Shinano Daijō Fujiwara Tadakuni.
Tadakuni is ranked Jōjō-saku by Fujishiro and classified as Wazamono, reflecting both the artistic refinement and cutting ability of his blades.
The blade displays the refined characteristics for which this lineage is admired: a finely worked itame-hada mixed with mokume, abundant ji-nie, and a controlled hamon in notare mixed with subtle gunome.
The bōshi is clean and restrained, finishing in ko-maru with a brief kaeri. The blade remains healthy and in good polish, allowing the quality of the jigane and the activity of the hamon to be clearly appreciated.
The nakago is ubu, of kuri-jiri form, with one mekugi-ana. The signature is deeply and confidently chiselled on the omote side, consistent with early works made before the formal granting of the Shinano Daijō title.
The sword is mounted in a refined Edo-period koshirae. The saya is finished in elegant black kuro-roiro with an ishime-nuri texture, giving the mounting a sober and dignified appearance.
The tsuka is wrapped in tightly braided plum-coloured silk ito over fine white same-gawa, creating a beautiful contrast between colour, texture and material.
The fuchi-kashira and matching menuki are crafted in shakudō and decorated with grape vines and gourds (budō to hyōtan), enriched with gilded highlights.
This classical Edo-period motif symbolises abundance, prosperity and longevity, making it especially appropriate for a refined samurai mounting.
The iron tsuba is carved in sukashi with autumnal grass motifs and retains traces of its original iro-age patina.
Its restrained design complements the elegance of the koshirae while preserving the sober martial character expected of a high-quality Edo-period mounting.
The blade is accompanied by a formal NBTHK Hozon Tōken certificate, issued in May of Reiwa 7 (2025), attributing the work to Shodai Shinano Daijō Tadakuni.
It is also accompanied by a Hiroshima Prefecture registration dating from Shōwa 39 (1964), further supporting its documented history within Japan.
Signed works by Shodai Shinano Daijō Tadakuni are highly respected within the Hizen tradition, especially examples bearing early Kyoto signatures and accompanied by NBTHK papers.
Combining an important attribution, elegant workmanship, complete Edo-period koshirae and formal NBTHK certification, this wakizashi represents a refined and highly collectible example of early Edo-period Japanese sword craftsmanship.
