An authentic and complete Japanese gusoku, preserved together with its original gusoku-bitsu, the lacquered storage chest traditionally used to transport and protect a samurai’s armor. The helmet is constructed with a zunari bachi, a style formed from a relatively small number of riveted iron plates that create a smooth and continuous surface without the raised rivet rows characteristic of koboshi helmets. Mounted prominently at the front is a magnificent pair of kuwagata finished in vivid vermilion red lacquer. Their broad outward-curving form creates an imposing silhouette, immediately identifying the armor from a distance and giving the helmet exceptional visual impact.
Positioned between the horns stands an elaborate gilded maedate carved in the form of rising flames. At its centre appears a Japanese character corresponding to the mon, or personal crest, of the armor’s original owner, adding an individual historical dimension to the piece.
The shikoro descends in stepped lacquered lamellae joined with elegant gold-toned odoshi lacing that continues consistently throughout the entire armor.
The dō is constructed from horizontal lacquered iron plates finished in a rich dark brown tone. Along its upper edge runs a broad band of textured aged-gold lacquer, a refined decorative treatment generally reserved for commissioned armors of superior quality and intended to highlight the most visible section of the cuirass.
At the centre hangs an orange silk tassel suspended from a metal ring and cord, introducing a vivid accent that complements the red kuwagata while reinforcing the ceremonial elegance of the ensemble.
The kote combine two complementary systems of protection. The upper arms are covered with decorative silk featuring an ochre floral pattern, beneath which tightly woven kusari chainmail provides flexible defence.
From the elbow to the wrist the protection transitions into tsutsu-gote, rigid articulated tubular forearm guards formed by lacquered brown iron plates. This construction offers excellent protection while preserving comfortable movement.
The rectangular sode are composed of lacquered lamellae matching the colour and finish of the cuirass. Each row is connected by elegant gold-toned odoshi lacing, creating perfect visual continuity throughout the armor while maintaining its restrained and dignified appearance.
The kusazuri descend in lacquered lamellae decorated with circular riveted medallions finished in gold, pale green and red. These ornamental reinforcements are distributed across several sections of the armor in a heraldic arrangement, enriching the visual composition while preserving the practical construction expected of Edo-period armor.
The haidate are constructed from textile decorated with a traditional kikkō pattern, representing the hexagonal geometry of a tortoise shell, a motif historically associated with longevity and protection in Japanese decorative arts.
The suneate consist of articulated black-lacquered iron splints secured with ochre-coloured fabric ties. The lower section near the ankle incorporates a striking red leather panel that harmonises beautifully with the vermilion kuwagata of the helmet.
Included with the armor is its original gusoku-bitsu, the traditional lacquered storage chest used to transport and preserve complete suits of samurai armor.
Constructed from wood finished in deep red lacquer, the chest retains its original wrought-iron corner reinforcements, hinges and side carrying handles. The survival of the original storage chest significantly enhances both the historical integrity and collectability of the ensemble.
The lacquer remains well preserved across all rigid iron components of the armor. Expected signs of age and use are limited primarily to the textile sections of the kote and haidate, entirely consistent with the armor’s historical age.
No invasive restorations are present, allowing the armor to retain its authentic historical character and original craftsmanship.
Complete Japanese armors accompanied by their original gusoku-bitsu are increasingly difficult to find, particularly when they preserve such a coherent combination of original lacquer, elegant fittings and balanced colour composition.
