What samurai armor do we buy?

We consider a wide range of authentic Japanese armor, including:
  • Complete samurai armor sets
  • Gusoku
  • Yoroi
  • Edo-period armor
  • Earlier armor and armor components
  • Daimyo armor
  • Kabuto included with armor sets
  • Menpō and facial armor
  • Dō / cuirasses
  • Sode / shoulder guards
  • Kote / armored sleeves
  • Haidate
  • Suneate
  • Maedate and helmet ornaments
  • Armor storage boxes
  • Certified or documented examples
  • Partial armor sets
  • Mixed samurai collections
We also consider individual armor components when they have sufficient historical, artistic or collector interest.

Complete armor or individual components

You do not need to have a perfectly complete suit of armor. Many surviving samurai armors have been altered, restored, combined or separated over time.
We can assess: complete matching sets, partially complete armors, individual original components, reassembled historical sets, armors with later restoration, armor with associated storage boxes or documentation.
Clear photographs of all available components are the best starting point.

Sell Gusoku or Yoroi

If you own an antique gusoku or yoroi, Supein Nihonto can assess the armor based on its construction, age, workmanship, condition, completeness and collector interest.
Important characteristics may include:
  • Historical period
  • Armor style
  • School or workshop
  • Materials
  • Lacquer
  • Lacing
  • Ironwork
  • Clan crests or mon
  • Originality
  • Matching components
  • Restoration
  • Provenance
  • Documentation
If you are unsure whether the armor should be described as gusoku, yoroi or another form of Japanese armor, you do not need to identify it before contacting us.
Inherited samurai armor

Inherited samurai armor

Samurai armor is often passed down through families without detailed records.
If you inherited a Japanese armor and know little about it, that is not a problem.
Please send:
  • General photographs of the complete armor
  • Front and back views
  • Detailed photographs of the helmet
  • Interior photographs where possible
  • Close-ups of lacquer, metal fittings and lacing
  • Any signatures or inscriptions
  • Storage boxes
  • Certificates or documents
  • Any known provenance
Even if you cannot read Japanese inscriptions, send clear photographs of them.

What determines the value of samurai armor?

The value of an antique Japanese armor can depend on many factors.
A visually impressive armor is not automatically more valuable than a simpler example. Originality, quality and historical importance can be equally significant.
These commonly include:
  • Age
  • Historical period
  • Completeness
  • Originality
  • Quality of craftsmanship
  • Condition
  • Armor type
  • School or maker
  • Lacquer and decorative work
  • Metal fittings
  • Clan crests
  • Provenance
  • Certification or documentation
  • Rarity
  • Collector demand

How the selling process works

Use the form below to send clear photographs of the armor and any available documentation.

For complete sets, include full views as well as close-up photographs.

We review the armor to determine whether it fits the type of material Supein Nihonto acquires.

We may ask for additional photographs, dimensions or information.

If the armor is of interest, we will contact you directly to discuss it further.

If an agreement is reached, we will explain the next steps for payment, documentation and secure delivery.

For large or important armor collections, arrangements can be discussed individually.

Selling a samurai armor collection

We also purchase collections containing multiple suits of armor or mixed samurai material.
Collections may include:
  • Several complete armors
  • Armor and kabuto
  • Armor components
  • Weapons and armor together
  • Samurai art and related objects
  • Family or inherited collections
  • Long-established private collections
You do not need to photograph every object individually at the first stage.
Several overview photographs of the collection are often enough to begin the conversation.

Not sure whether your armor is authentic?

You do not need to authenticate the armor before contacting us.
Japanese armor can be complex, and later reproductions, restorations and composite sets exist.
Send us detailed photographs and any information you have.
We can determine whether the piece is relevant to our area of specialisation and whether we would like to examine it further.

I had an excellent experience with Supein Nihoto. I purchased a katana and a wakizashi, and both pieces are truly beautiful — carefully selected and of remarkable quality. You can immediately see the attention to detail and the seller’s passion for what he offers. The packaging was also exceptional: all the documentation was perfectly arranged in a refined envelope, which added a very elegant touch to the whole experience. As a thoughtful gesture, he even included a small katana kake stand as a gift, which I greatly appreciated. Beyond the objects themselves, the seller was very helpful, responsive, and clearly knowledgeable. His selection is outstanding, and you can tell he deals in genuinely fine items. Highly recommended — I would definitely purchase from Supein Nihoto again

I received a beautiful tokubetsu hozon nihonto for Christmas from Supein. Actually my wife purchased the sword after receiving some helpful hints and recommendations lol. She knows absolutely nothing about nihonto but Supein walked her through everything honestly and I ended up with something beyond my dreams and expectations, honestly. The packing was exceptional, shipping fast and the sword itself a literal work of art. Supein has a lifetime customer now as my collection grows. Thank you!

I had been looking for a tachi with a lot of curvature for a long time and I called Supein Nihonto. They didn't have any tachi with the sori I was looking for, but I was treated with a lot of love and professionalism and we were talking for a long time. The next day I received a call from the shop, telling me that they had received new swords and that there was a tachi with a lot of sori. That same afternoon he already had a lot of photos of the sword and its measurements. I found the price good, especially if I compared it to other Spanish sellers of Nihonto. The shipment took a day and the package arrived in perfect condition, as the person in charge of the packaging puts a lot of effort into the work and the result is a strong packaging. Without a doubt, Supein Nihonto is my 100% recommendation!
