What is a Netsuke?

A Netsuke is a small Japanese toggle traditionally used to secure objects suspended from the obi.
Because traditional Japanese clothing did not include pockets in the Western sense, personal objects such as inrō, tobacco pouches and other containers could be suspended by cords.
The Netsuke acted as the counterweight that prevented the cord from slipping through the obi.
Over time, netsuke developed into highly sophisticated miniature sculptures.

Different types of netsuke

Netsuke exist in several forms.
These may include:
  • Katabori netsuke
  • Manju netsuke
  • Ryusa netsuke
  • Kagamibuta
  • Sashi netsuke
  • Mask netsuke
  • Other specialised forms
Some are fully sculptural, while others are flatter or more compact.
If you are unsure which type you own, you do not need to identify it before contacting us.

What determines the value of a Netsuke?

The value of an antique Netsuke depends on several factors.
These may include:
Artist or carver, school, historical period, material, quality of carving, originality, subject, expression and composition, condition, patina, signature, provenance, rarity, collector demand.
A signature can be important, but workmanship and authenticity remain essential.

Wood Netsuke

Wood is one of the materials most strongly associated with netsuke carving.
Carvers used different woods to create:
  • Animals
  • Human figures
  • Mythological creatures
  • Buddhist subjects
  • Everyday scenes
  • Masks
  • Plants and natural forms
Original patina, wear and handling can contribute significantly to the character of an antique wood Netsuke.
Please do not oil, polish or aggressively clean the piece before assessment.

Signed and unsigned Netsuke

Many Netsuke carry signatures, although unsigned examples are also common.
A signature may provide information about:
Carver, school, workshop, region, period.
However, a signature alone does not determine authenticity or value.
We assess the entire piece, including:
Carving quality, material, subject, style, himotoshi, patina, condition, signature, school, period, provenance.
Fine unsigned Netsuke can also be highly collectible.

The importance of the himotoshi

The himotoshi are the openings through which the cord passes.
Their placement, shape and construction can provide useful information when assessing a Netsuke.
They may help indicate:
  • How the piece was intended to function
  • Carving technique
  • Wear from use
  • Possible age
  • Construction method
Please include photographs of the underside and himotoshi when submitting a Netsuke.

Netsuke subjects and motifs

Japanese Netsuke can depict an enormous range of subjects.
Common themes include:
Animals, zodiac animals, shishi, dragons, rats, monkeys, tigers, toads, mythological creatures, samurai, deities, buddhist figures, farmers and workers, actors, everyday life, folklore, plants and natural forms.
The subject alone does not determine value, but unusual or particularly well-executed designs can attract strong collector interest.

Netsuke materials

Netsuke were produced in many materials.
These may include:
  • Wood
  • Stag antler
  • Lacquer
  • Ceramic
  • Metal
  • Bone
  • Ivory
  • Mixed materials
Material identification is sometimes difficult from photographs alone, so you do not need to identify it yourself.
Send clear images and any information you already have.

Antique ivory Netsuke

Some historical netsuke were carved in ivory.
The sale and international movement of ivory is subject to legal restrictions that vary by jurisdiction and by the age and documentation of the object.
If you own an ivory netsuke, send us:
  • Clear photographs
  • Any provenance
  • Purchase documentation
  • Previous certificates
  • Information about where and when it was acquired
We can first determine whether the piece is relevant to our collection and then consider the applicable legal requirements.

Netsuke by known carvers

Netsuke by recognised artists can be particularly interesting to collectors.
Attribution may depend on:
  • Signature
  • Carving style
  • Material
  • Technique
  • Subject
  • Known examples
  • School
  • Provenance
If your Netsuke is signed, please send a sharp close-up of the signature as well as photographs of the complete piece.

Inherited Netsuke

Many Netsuke reach current owners through inheritance.
You do not need to know:
  • The artist
  • The school
  • The period
  • The material
  • Whether the signature is genuine
  • Whether the piece has been published
  • Its current market value
Clear photographs are usually enough to begin an initial assessment.

How the selling process works

Complete the form and upload clear images of the netsuke and any documentation.
We assess material, workmanship, condition, attribution and collector interest.
We may request measurements, macro photographs, signature details or provenance information.
If the Netsuke is of interest and an agreement is reached, we will explain the next steps for payment and secure delivery.

Netsuke in storage boxes

Some Netsuke are preserved in traditional or later collector boxes.
These may contain:
  • Inscriptions
  • Artist attribution
  • Collector labels
  • Inventory numbers
  • Seals
  • Old documentation
Please photograph the box as well as the Netsuke.
Associated packaging and labels may provide useful information about provenance.

Netsuke with provenance

Provenance can provide useful context for an antique Netsuke.
Relevant information may include:
  • Previous collectors
  • Old collection labels
  • Auction records
  • Dealer invoices
  • Exhibition history
  • Published references
  • Original storage boxes
  • Family history
  • Purchase history
Even incomplete provenance can be useful.
Please send photographs or copies of any documentation that accompanies the piece.

What photographs should I send?

Please send:
  • Front view
  • Back view
  • Both sides
  • Top and underside
  • Himotoshi
  • Signature
  • Close-ups of carving
  • Any damage or restoration
  • Dimensions
  • Storage box
  • Certificates or labels
  • Provenance documentation
Macro photographs are particularly useful for signatures and fine carving details.

Condition and restoration

We also consider Netsuke that are not in perfect condition.
These may show:
  • Surface wear
  • Old patina
  • Minor chips
  • Small cracks
  • Historical repairs
  • Worn details
  • Minor losses
  • Signs of prolonged handling
Condition can influence value, but genuine age and historical use are not necessarily negative.
Please do not attempt restoration before assessment.

Do not clean antique Netsuke aggressively

Cleaning can alter the surface of an antique Netsuke.
This is particularly important for pieces with:
  • Old patina
  • Fine carving
  • Inlays
  • Lacquer
  • Delicate surface details
  • Natural wear from handling
If the piece is dusty, leave it as it is unless you are certain how it should be handled.
Original surface condition is generally more useful for assessment than a recently polished appearance.

We also purchase complete collections of antique Japanese Netsuke.
These may include:
Wood netsuke, signed pieces, unsigned pieces, animal netsuke, figural netsuke, manju, ryusa, kagamibuta, pieces by known carvers, boxed netsuke, collections with provenance.
For larger collections, you do not need to photograph every piece individually at first.
Overview photographs together with detailed images of the most important pieces are sufficient for an initial review.

Mik – Roma, Italia

I had an excellent experience with Supein Nihoto. I purchased a katana and a wakizashi, and both pieces are truly beautiful — carefully selected and of remarkable quality. You can immediately see the attention to detail and the seller’s passion for what he offers. The packaging was also exceptional: all the documentation was perfectly arranged in a refined envelope, which added a very elegant touch to the whole experience. As a thoughtful gesture, he even included a small katana kake stand as a gift, which I greatly appreciated. Beyond the objects themselves, the seller was very helpful, responsive, and clearly knowledgeable. His selection is outstanding, and you can tell he deals in genuinely fine items. Highly recommended — I would definitely purchase from Supein Nihoto again

I received a beautiful tokubetsu hozon nihonto for Christmas from Supein. Actually my wife purchased the sword after receiving some helpful hints and recommendations lol. She knows absolutely nothing about nihonto but Supein walked her through everything honestly and I ended up with something beyond my dreams and expectations, honestly. The packing was exceptional, shipping fast and the sword itself a literal work of art. Supein has a lifetime customer now as my collection grows. Thank you!
