What is a Kojiri?

The Kojiri is the fitting placed at the lower end of a Japanese sword scabbard, or saya.

Its function was to protect the end of the scabbard, but kojiri could also be highly decorative and form part of a coordinated koshirae.

Depending on the sword and mounting, Kojiri may vary in:

Some examples are relatively simple and functional, while others display sophisticated metalwork.

Kojiri from complete Koshirae

A Kojiri may be especially interesting when it remains associated with its original or historical Koshirae.

What determines the value of a Kojiri?

The value of an antique Kojiri depends on several factors.

These may include:

Maker, school, historical period, material, quality of carving, inlay, patination, decorative technique, condition, originality, association with a complete koshirae, certification, provenance, rarity, collector demand.

A Kojiri that forms part of a coordinated mounting can have additional significance.

Signed and unsigned Kojiri

Kojiri may be signed or unsigned.

If a signature or inscription is present, it may help identify:

Maker, school, workshop, region, period.

However, a signature alone does not determine authenticity or value.

Material, workmanship, decoration, style, condition, patina, attribution, certification, provenance.

Fine unsigned fittings can also be collectible.

Materials and decorative techniques

Japanese Kojiri were made using a range of metals and alloys.

Common materials include:

Iron, shakudo, shibuichi, copper, brass, silver, gold, mixed-metal alloys.

Decorative techniques may include:

Engraving, relief carving, gold inlay, silver inlay, iroe, nanako, patination, applied decoration.

Kojiri in storage boxes

Collectible Japanese fittings are sometimes preserved in fitted wooden boxes.

These may contain:

Please photograph the box as well as the Kojiri.

Associated documentation may help with provenance and attribution.

Inherited Kojiri

Many Japanese sword fittings are inherited without detailed information.

You do not need to know:

The material
Whether the piece is signed
Whether it is certified
Its current market value

Clear photographs are usually enough for us to begin an initial review.

Kojiri do not need to be in perfect condition.

We may consider examples showing:

Please do not polish or aggressively clean antique fittings.

What photographs should i send?

Please send:

Front view, back view, side views, interior, close-ups of decoration, signature or inscriptions, kojiri mounted on the saya, if applicable, complete koshirae, storage box, certificates, provenance documents.

Neutral lighting is preferable so that the surface, patina and decoration can be seen clearly.

How the selling process works

Complete the form and upload clear photographs of the Kojiri and any associated documentation.

We assess material, workmanship, condition, attribution and collector interest.

We may request measurements, close-up photographs or more information about the associated koshirae.

If the piece is of interest and an agreement is reached, we will explain the next steps for payment and secure delivery.
