What are Fuchi and Kashira?

The Fuchi and Kashira are fittings associated with the handle, or Tsuka, of a traditional Japanese sword.

The fuchi forms the collar near the tsuba, while the kashira forms the fitting at the end of the handle.

They were often designed as a matching pair and could feature sophisticated decorative metalwork.

Common subjects include:

Samurai, animals, birds, plants and flowers, landscapes, mythological creatures, religious imagery, family crests, scenes from Japanese, history and literature.

Although originally functional sword components, fine fuchi-kashira are also collected independently as examples of Japanese metalwork.

Matching Fuchi-Kashira sets

A Fuchi and Kashira that were created as a matching set can have particular collector interest.

What determines the value of Tsuba?

The value of an antique Japanese tsuba depends on several factors.

Maker, school, historical period, material, forging quality, carving, inlay, openwork, design, subject, signature, condition, original patina, certification, provenance, rarity, collector demand.

Subtle differences in workmanship and attribution can have a significant effect on value.

Signed and unsigned fittings

Fuchi and Kashira may be signed or unsigned.

Signatures are often found on the Fuchi and can sometimes help identify:

However, a signature alone does not establish authenticity or value.

The workmanship, materials, style and consistency with the proposed artist or school must also be considered.

Fine unsigned examples can also be highly collectible.

Japanese Fuchi-Kashira were made using sophisticated metalworking techniques.

Materials may include:

Decorative techniques can include:

Nanako, takabori, katakiri-bori, iroe, gold inlay, silver inlay, engraving, relief carving, applied metal decoration.

Many important sword-fitting traditions produced Fuchi and Kashira.

You do not need to identify the school yourself.

Some sets survive together with their associated Menuki.

If you have Fuchi, Kashira and Menuki that appear to share the same theme or provenance, please send photographs of the complete group.

Related fittings can be particularly interesting when they form part of a coordinated sword mounting.

Do not separate a group simply because the pieces can be sold individually.

Fuchi-Kashira from a complete Koshirae

Sometimes Fuchi and Kashira remain mounted on an original or historical Koshirae.

If this is the case, photograph the complete sword mounting before removing anything.

Other associated elements may include:

Menuki, Tsuba, Tsuka, Saya, Kojiri, Kurigata, Kozuka, Kogai.

A fitting’s relationship with the complete Koshirae can provide useful historical context and may influence collector interest.

What photographs should i send?

For a Fuchi-Kashira set, please send:

Front of the Fuchi, back of the Fuchi, both sides, interior, signature or inscriptions, front of the Kashira, back and sides of the Kashira, detailed photographs of the decoration, associated Menuki, if present, storage box, NBTHK or NTHK papers, any other documentation.

Use neutral lighting where possible so that the metal surface and patina are clearly visible.

How the selling process works

Complete the form and upload clear photographs of the fittings and any available documentation.

We assess workmanship, material, condition, attribution and collector interest.

We may request measurements, additional close-ups or provenance information.

If the fittings are of interest and an agreement is reached, we will explain the next steps for payment and secure delivery.

Condition and original patina

Fuchi and Kashira do not need to be in perfect condition for us to consider them.

We may assess pieces showing:

Do not polish or aggressively clean antique fittings.
