A charming antique Japanese wood shishi netsuke dating from the Edo period, depicting one of the most recognisable protective creatures in East Asian visual culture.
Compact and expressive, the carving combines a strong sculptural silhouette with an attractive natural patina developed through age and handling. A particularly appealing feature is the small movable ball held inside the open mouth, adding both technical interest and a playful element to the composition.

The shishi is a mythological guardian creature generally represented as a stylised lion or lion-dog. In Japanese art, shishi imagery became strongly associated with protection, strength and the repelling of harmful influences.
Related guardian figures can be seen at the entrances of temples and shrines, where paired lion-like creatures symbolically protect sacred spaces.
These associations made the shishi a natural subject for netsuke carvers, combining auspicious meaning with an expressive form particularly well suited to small-scale sculpture.
