Inside the Japan auctions
Several times each year, a few selected specialized dealers gather across Japan to participate in private auctions dedicated to Japanese swords, armor, netsuke, Noh masks, ukiyo-e, fittings, and other historical works of Japanese art.
These events provide access to pieces that rarely appear on the open market. They are highly specialized and, in many cases, difficult to access from Europe, even for professionals in the trade. Our direct presence in Japan allows us to work within these circles and maintain relationships with dealers, restorers, collectors, and specialists closely connected to the preservation of Japanese art and history.
At these auctions, pieces are examined with particular attention to authenticity, condition, provenance, workmanship, and historical significance. Many come from private collections and established sources that seldom reach the international market.
Our work, however, is not limited to Japan. Throughout the year we also travel across Europe in search of important Japanese works, visiting auctions, antique fairs, specialist markets, private collections, and galleries. Some of the most interesting pieces are often found far from the places where one would normally expect them.
This combination of direct access in Japan and continuous sourcing throughout Europe allows Supein Nihonto to select swords, armor, netsuke, Noh masks, ukiyo-e, fittings, and other works of Japanese art from a wide range of professional and private sources.
For us, sourcing is not simply about finding objects. It is about having access to the right places, knowing what to look for, and recognizing the pieces that are truly worth acquiring.
